Digital Documents and Legislative Changes in the Czech Republic: What Applies at Home and Abroad?

Car Rental Information

Dear customers,

We bring you an overview of important changes in traffic legislation that will make renting vehiclesand traveling with our car rental service in Prague easier. These changes are significant not only for those who rent a vehicle from us but also for anyone who appreciates useful information for drivers.

1. Digital Documents for More Convenient Travel

Digital Documents: How They Work in the Czech Republic

As of 2024, drivers in the Czech Republic no longer need to carry a physical small technical certificate or driver’s license, as these documents are now available in digital form. The digitalization of documents provides greater convenience, faster verification during traffic checks, and reduced risk of loss or damage.

How Does It Work in the Czech Republic?

• The digital driver’s license can be displayed in the eDoklady mobile app (which is expected to be integrated into the Citizen’s Portal in the future).

Police and other authorities can verify the validity of documents online without requiring physical document checks.

Drivers do not need to carry the physical driver’s license if they are traveling only within the Czech Republic.

This applies only to Czech citizens – foreign visitors must still carry physical documents.

Digital Documents and Traveling Abroad

Although the Czech Republic has introduced digital documents, most European and global countries still require physical licenses. Therefore, when traveling abroad, we highly recommend carrying your physical driver’s license and other necessary documents.

How Do Other Countries Handle Digital Driver’s Licenses?

Slovakia: No digital driver’s license yet, but implementation is planned. Police require a physical license.

Germany: No official digital driver’s license. A physical card is mandatory.

Austria: Same rules as Germany – a physical license is required.

Poland: A driver’s license can be displayed in the mObywatel app, but a physical license is required for international travel.

France, Italy, Spain: Digital documents are not recognized; a printed driver’s license is mandatory.

USA, Canada: Some U.S. states (e.g., Arizona, Louisiana) are testing digital driver’s licenses. However, European travelers must have a physical license and an International Driving Permit (IDP) if required by the state.
